New Trends for the Bridesmaids

Bridesmaid's dresses can be such a hit or miss.  Some brides get it just right: their bridesmaids stand out as being a part of the wedding party, yet they are not over-the-top.  Other brides, however, are not always so lucky.  You know the dresses I'm talking about, right?  The ones that will never emerge from the closet ever again; the ones that look funny in pictures after a couple years go by because they scream "bridesmaid!"  I recently saw some wedding pictures in which the bride had thirteen (whoa!) bridesmaids and two junior bridesmaids on the altar during the ceremony - and they were all wearing the exact same floor-length hot pink dress.  Oh, and let's not forget there were an equal number of groomsmen in black tuxedos and pink bow ties on the altar as well.  There were so many people up there that the bride & groom all but disappeared into a sea of pink and black.  The wedding pictures looked odd with so many people posing in each one of them!  I understand that the bride obviously has a lot of close girlfriends, and she wanted each of them to have a special role in her wedding - but there are so many other special roles someone can have, besides bring a bridesmaid

The bridesmaids' dresses should never outshine the bride's.  They are meant to compliment the bride, and so sometimes less is more.  This does not mean that the bridesmaids need to be dull, it just means that maybe straying away from the traditional "bridesmaid dress" could be a good thing. There are several new trends emerging that, in my opinion, showcase the bridesmaids perfectly.

The first new trend: have fewer bridesmaids.  I'm sure you saw at least part of the Royal Wedding.  Instead of having a string of bridesmaids processing up the aisle, Duchess Catherine chose to only have her sister, Pippa Middleton, as her Maid of Honor.  She had several special little girls process in as well, but the overall look was clean, streamlined and simple.

The second newly emerging trend: bridesmaids don't always have to match.  Some brides are now opting to let their bridesmaids choose the dress they will wear.  Some brides will use different styles in the same hue, and others will choose complimentary colors in similar styles.  I think this can be so romantic and classy.  The bridesmaids can choose dresses that flatter their complexion and body type, and they will most likely wear the dresses over and over again.  It looks beautiful and timeless in pictures, and it never distracts from the bride.

Third new trend: bridesmaids can wear white.  Some consider this to be a "daring" new trend.  I, however, think it is absolutely lovely.  It is such a clean, fresh, streamlined and timeless look.  I think it is so elegant and classy.  Some may worry that the bride will blend in with her bridesmaids; but keep in mind that the bride always stands out in her own way, no matter what.  The bridesmaids white dresses would never be the same as the bride's wedding gown, so the bride still shines in her own right.  You can choose shades of off-white or cream to distinguish them from the bridal gown, or you could choose cocktail or tea-length dresses.  Just keep in mind that although the bride may choose for her maids to wear white, it does not mean that any guest should ever choose to wear white,  unless instructed by the bride to do so!  This is a trend that Duchess Catherine chose to use as well - the world couldn't get over Pippa's white dress, yet the bride was still the star of the show.
